HIS EXCELLENCY MAJOR-GENERAL (RET’D) JIOJI KONUSI KONROTE

BIOGRAPHY FOR THE PRESIDENT
The President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote, is a former Soldier, Civil Servant, Diplomat, Government Minister and Community Worker.
As a Soldier, he was seconded to the New Zealand Army and served with the 1 Ranger Squadron, New Zealand Special Air Service (NZ SAS), before being commissioned into the Republic of The Fiji Military Force (RFMF) Infantry Regiment and posted as a subaltern to further serve with the British Army’s Far East Land Forces.
He rose through the ranks of the RFMF to become a Major-General and the first Fijian to hold the position of a United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and concurrent Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL 1997-1999). Prior to this, he was appointed UNIFIL Deputy Force Commander (1990-1991) and Deputy Commander/Chief of Staff of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (1991-1997).
As a Civil Servant, he was appointed Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration (2000-2002). His Excellency was appointed Fiji’s High Commissioner to the Commonwealth of Australia and Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore, based in Canberra, (2002-2006).
His Excellency contested the 2006 General Elections after which, he was elected as an Independent member for Rotuma and was appointed as Minister of State for Immigration and Ex-Servicemen. Following the transition of Government in December 2006, His Excellency became a Community Worker where he was appointed by Government as the Advisor to the Council of Rotuma. In 2014, His Excellency again contested the General Elections where he won a seat and was appointed as the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, a position he held until October 2015.
His Excellency was subsequently elected as the President of the Republic of Fiji on 12 October 2015 when Parliament, for the first time under Fiji’s Constitution, voted for the Head of State. His Excellency was re-appointed by Parliament for a second three-year term on Friday 31 August 2018.
His Excellency was the Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific where he officiated at the University’s graduation ceremonies from July 2017 to June 2018. He is also the Lead Advocate and Champion in the National campaign to promote Health and Wellness in Fiji’s endeavour to curb the prevalence of Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) related ailments. He is also Patron of numerous organisations in the Sports and Social Services sectors.
His Excellency is a graduate of Natabua High School, the New Zealand Army Administration and Tactical Schools in Waiouru, the Australian Army Officer Cadet School in Portsea, the Australian Army Command and Staff College in Queenscliff, the Australian College of Defence and Strategic Studies in Canberra and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in the United States of America.
He is married to Madam Sarote Konrote and they have two sons and six grandchildren.
